Bruce Hobday

Owner & Managing Director

Bruce Hobday is a true "serial sailmaker," beginning his journey at the age of 15 in 1965 with an apprenticeship at Rolly Tasker in Perth, Australia. His career path took him from Sydney to France, where he lived until 2015.

Over the years, Bruce worked with renowned sailmaking groups such as North and Hood and also with sailcloth manufacturers Howe & Bainbridge, where he managed their French branch for 8 years. This extensive experience has given him a unique holistic insight into sailmaking, sail design, materials, and production.

An avid sailor, Bruce has raced everything from Sabot dinghies to 80-foot Maxi yachts. He has participated in prestigious events such as the Mini, Quarter, Half, One Ton Cups, as well as the Maxi Circuit. In his youth, he was even part of the French 470 sailing team.

Our Story

Why China?

In 2011, Bruce escaped the prospect of "retirement" when he took on the role of South European Sales Manager for China Sails Factory - at that time the world's largest offshore sailmaking facility dedicated to producing custom sails for global sailmakers.

By 2015, he became the responsible for operations at the factory. Later, after a few years as a sail design consultant, in 2019 Bruce had an opportunity to acquire the business of Sails East Hong Kong including its manufacturing facility in mainland China.

His entrepreneurial vision combines his passion for sailmaking with a strategic approach: leveraging the better business environment in Asia to offer custom-designed, high-quality sails at a production cost more accessible than in Western markets.

His attention to detail and elaborated quality procedures has gained him the name of "Grumpy Bruce" among his friends and staff.
